Dr. Sergey Tzotchev

Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency

Born on the 28 October 1954.

Dr. Sergey Tzotchev was appointed as Head of the regulatory authority on nuclear safety and radiation protection in October 2004 by a governmental decision. In August 2007 he was awarded a new 5-year term, after completing the term of office of the former chairman.

Prior to his appointment as NRA Chairman, Sergey Tzotchev worked for 25 years in the Kozloduy NPP. He has occupied a number of managerial positions in the field of radiochemistry, radiation protection and monitoring of the environment. His latest position in the Kozloduy NPP was Director of the “Safety and Quality” Department.

Sergey Tzotchev is a graduate from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Sofia University, (1974 – 1979). He has Ph. D in radioanalytical chemistry (1988). He has specialized at the Atomic Institute of Austrian Universities, Vienna and at the IAEA Research Center, Seibersdorf, Austria.

Dr. Tzotchev is a member of the Bulgarian Nuclear Society, of the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association and of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group.
