Assoc. Prof. Dr. Latchesar Kostov
Deputy Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency
Born on the 11 October 1953 in Sofia.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Latchesar Kostov is deputy chairman of the NRA as of January 2006.
He has been working in the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) since 1978, where he has been holding the following job positions, physicist, researcher and senior researcher. In the period January 1979 – August 1982 he specializes in the Central Institute for Nuclear Research Rossendorf of the Academy of Sciences of German Democratic Republic. From August 1996 till March 1997 he is holding the position of Chairman of the Committee on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
He leads and participates in various research projects in the field of experimental research of the nuclear structure. The results from these activities have been published in more than 50 scientific papers in journals such as Nuclear Physics A, Zeitschrift fuer Physik, Nuclear Instruments and Methods etc. He leads a number of applied projects for research of the natural radioactivity, assessment of the level of radioactive contamination of damaged terrains and programmes for their remediation, the impact of the Chernobyl accident upon the territory of Bulgaria and others.
In 1978 he graduated in Nuclear Physics from the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridsky. In 1984 he defended a Ph. D in experimental nuclear physics.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Latchesar Kostov is a member of the Scientific Technical Committee of EURATOM. He takes part in the Technical meeting of the managers of regulatory bodies on radiation protection in Europe and also in the Committee of plenipotentiary representatives of the member states of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russian Federation.
