Presentation of the National Report under the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management in the framework of the fourth Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties, Vienna, May 15, 2012

The national report of the Republic of Bulgaria was presented today on the Joint Convention (JC) review meeting at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna. The Contracting Parties noted the following: new National strategy for SF management and RAW covering the period until 2030 is approved; Amended Nuclear Act (ASUNE); new Dry Spent Fuel Storage Facility have been commissioned; decision on sitting, design and construction of a National LILW disposal facility have been taken; decommissioning strategy have been adopted and ongoing preparatory activities for decommissioning in Kozloduy NPP are going on; SE RAW is the new operator of Kozloduy NPP Units 1 and 2.
As main challenges in front of the Bulgarian Nuclear Sector were specified as follows: RAW management in Novi Han branch taking into account the forthcoming construction of a new National Repository; continuation of the management of the RAW from past practices; funding assurance of the decommissioning activities; future management of the HLW.
As good practices were highlighted the requirements set out in the Nuclear Act for management of Orphan Radioactive Sources, the successful implementation of RAW minimisation and the consideration of the post-Fukushima accident lessons learned.
Bulgaria was congratulated for the thorough presentation of the report as well as for the answers to the posted questions. The countries, participating in the discussions, gave a high-grade to our country with regard to the fulfilment of the requirements ensuing from the JC.
