Three gamma-defectoscopes discovered in scrap-metal

Event description:

The Emergency centre of the NRA has been notified that on 22nd July 2009 three gauges for gamma-radiographer were discovered in a scrap-metal storage, owned by “Mackmetal Holding” JSC.

The performed on 23rd July 2009 on-site inspection showed that the all three radiographers type “Gammarid 192/120” are unloaded. The gauges are locked, in non-operational position, stored in lead transportation containers.

The measured values of the dose rates were between 13 μSv/h and 30 μSv/h on the surface of the radiographers. The elevated dose rates, compared with the natural background, are due only to the fact that there protective shielding is made by depleted uranium.

All gauges were temporary stored at the safe place prior to there disposal as radioactive waste by the State Enterprise Radioactive Waste.

There is no any danger for the population and the environment.
