Discovered radioactive source in a track, loaded with scrap metal

“Ecometal Engineering” Ltd., base “Gara Yana”, 31.07.2009

Site with SIR or place of the event: “Ecometal Engineering” Ltd., base “Gara Yana”

Date: 29.07.2009 Time:14:00

Event description:

A signal for finding of 1 unit SIR during radiation check of the black metal scrap in a truck, ouned by “Ecometal Engineering” Ltd., was received in the NRA Emergency centre on 29th July 2009.

The detailed measurements of the NRA inspectors on place on 30rd July showed that the radiation was caused by an encapsulated, semi-spherical shaped SIR with approximate sizes: diameter of 5 cm and height of 2 cm. Following a field spectrometric analysis, the presence of the radioactive isotope Ra-226 (radium-226) was identified. Possibly this SIR has being used for building in in trace piles.
The measured values of the gamma dose rate on the surface of the SIR were between 80 and 100 µSv/h.

After an order of the NRA Chairman, the source was deposited for safe keeping as radioactive waste to the State Enterprise “Radioactive Waste”.
